Winker’s Diner in South Beach is permanently closed.

Groot Hospitality

Less than six months after opening in Miami Beach, Winker’s Diner is closed.

Groot Hospitality’s premium deli and dining concept, owned by nightclub and restaurant entrepreneur David Grutman, suddenly closed during the holidays even before 2022 began.

The restaurant opened in September 2021 as part of the refurbished historic Firestone Garage on Alton Road in Miami Beach. The space was once a working garage and tire center which closed in 2015.

The restaurant could seat 240 people and served breakfast all day and giant sandwiches as well as soup and salad.

“I love to eat food at dinner, but I love to reinvent it and add our vision,” Grutman told the Miami Herald in early 2021. “We won’t be exactly the kind of place to have an early dinner.”

The Garage’s other two concepts, Toothfairy bakery and Sushi Fly Chicken, which serves pan-Asian dishes, will remain open, according to a spokesperson for Groot Hospitality. She gave no reason for the abrupt shutdown, but did confirm that a new Groot concept is expected to open in Winker’s space within the next 60 days.
