Lunch with Joe: H&D Chuckwagon

0

REED CITY – Located just on the outskirts of Reed City, H&D Chuckwagon is a cozy little local restaurant that I decided to venture into on Saturday afternoon.

As I typed the address into my GPS, I was stunned to see that it was, almost literally, located just around the corner from my apartment complex.

As I pulled into the parking lot, I had that almost guilty feeling I’ve had a few times since this series started a few months ago.

Having passed H&D Chuckwagon several times on the way to or towards Evart without even knowing it.

It’s like: how many fabulous meals have I missed, you know?

Anybody.

First of all, it is usually a good idea to check the opening hours of the establishment where you plan to eat before visiting that establishment.

That way, you won’t arrive 40 minutes before the kitchen closes for the afternoon, and you won’t be confused as to why you’re suddenly the only one in the dining room.

The menu was quite extensive and featured quite a few traditional dishes for breakfast and lunch.

That afternoon, for some reason, I had an intense craving for quality chicken, and this place certainly didn’t disappoint.

The fillets were served with a dish of green beans and, of course, French fries.

What really caught my eye was towards the bottom of the lunch menu page in the list of sauces that one could order.

Usually I only use barbecue sauce for dipping, but there was one other substance that caught my eye and surprised me a lot.

Drum roll please: salsa.

Yes, that’s right, I said salsa.

Not sure why, but I just couldn’t get over the randomness of this one and knew I had to order it to go with my offerings and fries.

To be completely honest, I highly doubt the salsa is for chicken fillets and fries, but I have to tell you that I was very pleased with the unique blend of flavors.
Call me a nutcase if you will, I’ve been called a lot worse a lot of times, but that’s a story for another day.

Everything about the meal was fantastic and the chicken fillets would have been equally delicious with or without the salsa.

Seriously, try it someday.
