BBC Great British Menu: Tom Phillips’ brilliant 2-star Michelin restaurant he runs in London – despite representing Wales on the show

The BBC’s Great British Menu is in its third week on the air, and this time we see contestants from Wales battling for a place in the final. Angela Harnett, former GBM winner and chef patroness of west London’s Murano restaurant, cooks for four chefs from across the country.

Among them are Larkin Cen, head chef at Woky Ko in Bristol, Nathan Davies of SY23 in Aberstwyth, and Tom Phillips, head chef at the two-star Michelin Restaurant Story in London.

This is Tom’s second time in the competition having competed for Wales in 2020. He returns this time after earning his second Michelin star at the Tooley Street restaurant, awarded last year.

History of the restaurant retained his two Michelin stars at the 2022 Trophies. The chef began his career at the Ritz, then moved to L’Enclume in the Lake District, before flying to New York to work at the three-Michelin-starred Per Se .

Tom was the youngest competitor to represent the UK at 26 in the internationally acclaimed Bocuse d’Or cooking competition in 2019, finishing tenth in the world.

The boss said The staff canteen that he describes his cuisine as “elegant, precise, innovative and unpretentious”.

The Story Restaurant is run by Chef Patron Tom Sellers, who tells his story and that of British cuisine through an ever-changing tasting menu. It earned its first Michelin star just five months after opening in 2013.

The restaurant’s ten-course tasting menu will set you back £185, and on arrival… you won’t be presented with a menu. If you’re looking to pair your dishes, seven-course drinks will cost £85 per person, and for the full month it will be £100. They also serve a soft drink pairing.

You’ll find tastes of ‘Custard’ with pumpkin, maple and Oscietra caviar, ‘Candle’; a homemade Parker roll, beef extract and pickled celery, and “Paddington Bear”; Foie gras with cardamom and marmalade (of course).

Inside the Story Restaurant, diners will find a sleek, modern open space with floor-to-ceiling windows offering sweeping views of London’s Tooley Street. The dining room walls are adorned with a subtle monochrome floral pattern, while a flock of birds flies overhead.

London has it all – the best nightlife, food, drink, events, markets, everything!
